First APEC Sports Event 2016
“APEC High Level Policy Dialogue on Education and Career Planning for Young Athletes”

This year, the 2016 Summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In next year, the 2017 Summer Universiade will take place in Taipei, Chinese Taipei. These are only two examples of major sporting events that will occur worldwide. The most important participants are the young athletes that will exert their greatest efforts to train and to compete.

However, an important challenge facing the young athletes is their education and career planning. Some of the athletes are university athletes working to obtain their university degrees as well as training in their respective sports. This means the university athletes must be provided with solid educational programs that can also take into account the athletes’ training requirements. For some athletes, they are training and competing on a full time basis. Nevertheless, all the athletes need to be offered effective career planning, so as to have rewarding careers after retiring from sports competition.

Therefore, the purpose of the High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) is to bring together representatives of government, academia and business to discuss the most effective ways to provide education and career planning for young athletes. In doing so, a holistic approach can be realized for developing solid educational and career planning programs. In addition, a network of APEC experts consisting of government officials, experts and businessmen will be developed to advance the relevant issues. The Chinese Taipei’s Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education is committed to work with APEC member economies to promote the education and career planning of young athletes in the Asia-Pacific region.
